Hervey Bay tours come down to three things: humpback whales in the bay from mid-July to October, K'gari (Fraser Island) across the water all year, and the calm bay itself for cruises at sunset. Almost every tour in Hervey Bay, from a A$55 twilight cruise to a A$1,022 five-day island trip, is a version of one of those.
This guide sorts out the Hervey Bay excursions and activities worth your money. We compare the trips on sale, show live GetYourGuide prices (checked regularly), and say who each one suits. We are an independent guide, not a tour operator or the official tourism site.
The three big Hervey Bay tours

Whale watching
Half-day cruises from A$119, full days to A$210, all from the Urangan marinas. The Queensland Government's main window is August to October.

K'gari (Fraser Island)
By boat to the quiet west coast (A$269) or by 4WD bus to Lake McKenzie and 75 Mile Beach (from A$279). Multi-day tours from A$549.

Bay cruises
Twilight cruises from A$55, champagne sunset sails, a turtle eco tour and a dolphin sail for when the whales have gone.
If you only have one day, the season decides. Between mid-July and October, book a whale watch first and fit K'gari around it. The rest of the year, K'gari is the day out and a cruise fills an evening.
Whale watching from Urangan, mid-July to October
Hervey Bay is one of the few places where humpback whales stop on their way south rather than swim straight past. The Queensland Government says about a quarter of the southbound population enters the bay, and names August to October as the main whale-watching window. Mothers and calves come mainly from September.
In October 2019 the World Cetacean Alliance named Hervey Bay and The Bluff in Durban, South Africa, as the world's first Whale Heritage Sites: a joint first, now called a Whale Heritage Area.
Whale tours from Hervey Bay leave the Urangan marinas, most half days in a morning and an afternoon run. Prices on GetYourGuide start at A$119 for Pacific Whale Foundation's 3-hour trip. Most half days are 4 hours at A$120 to A$160. Full days cost A$195 to A$210. Where an operator "guarantees" sightings, it usually means a free return trip, not a refund. The whale watching guide compares every boat, and the half day vs full day guide helps you choose the length.

K'gari (Fraser Island) tours from Hervey Bay
K'gari is the world's largest sand island, about 120 km long, and World Heritage-listed since 1992. The Butchulla people are its Traditional Owners, and K'gari is their name for it. The island has officially been called K'gari since 7 June 2023, though many signs and tours still say Fraser Island.
There are two ways onto the island for a day:
- By boat to the west coast. Tasman Venture's full day leaves the Urangan marinas for K'gari's quiet western side: beaches, snorkelling, kayaks and lunch, for A$269. In whale season a whale version of the day adds an in-water whale encounter, conditions permitting. See the remote west coast guide.
- By 4WD bus to the east coast. Tours cross on the vehicle ferry from River Heads, about 20 minutes south of town, to Lake McKenzie, 75 Mile Beach, Eli Creek and the Maheno wreck. Prices run from A$279 to A$349. See the 4WD east coast guide.
With two or more days, multi-day K'gari tours cost A$549 to A$1,022, with nights in a resort or beach house.

Hervey Bay cruises all year
When the whale boats are tied up, the bay is still busy. A 2-hour twilight cruise with a glass of bubbles costs A$55, and 90-minute champagne sunset cruises and sails cost A$95 to A$100. In daylight, the Great Sandy Strait wildlife cruises (A$60 to A$120) look for dolphins, turtles and dugong. Those three live in the bay all year, but no cruise can promise them.
The cruises guide compares them all, and the sunset cruise guide covers the evening options.

PossibleGoodPeak
Two seasons shape a Hervey Bay trip. From mid-July to October, whales fill the bay and demand peaks in the Queensland spring school holidays, from mid-September into early October, so book early. From November to March the whales are gone, but it is warm and the turtle nights near Bundaberg are running. K'gari tours run all year, though January to March are the wettest months.
Where Hervey Bay tours leave from
Knowing the two departure points saves a lot of confusion:
| Where | What leaves from there |
|---|---|
| Urangan marinas (Great Sandy Straits Marina on Buccaneer Drive, and the Hervey Bay Boat Club marina) | Whale watches, bay and sunset cruises, the remote K'gari day by boat |
| River Heads, about 20 minutes south | Vehicle and passenger ferries to K'gari (about 45–50 minutes), 4WD day and multi-day tours |
| Hervey Bay Airport | Lady Elliot Island day flights (about 40 minutes), scenic helicopter flights |
Many tours offer a courtesy pick-up from Hervey Bay accommodation. The exact check-in point is on your voucher. Hervey Bay is about 3.5 hours' drive north of Brisbane; the getting there guide covers flights, trains and coaches.

How we compare Hervey Bay tours
We check every operator fact on the operator's own website or a government page, and each guide lists its sources. Prices come from GetYourGuide's live feed in Australian dollars. Operator direct fares appear only with the operator named. No operator can pay for a better place or a kinder review.
If you book through our links, GetYourGuide may pay us a commission at no extra cost to you. Where booking direct is better, for example for family fares, we say so. More on this on our about page. Our operator reviews cover the main whale boats, K'gari tour companies and booking sites.
