Things to do in Hervey Bay: the full list, on the water and on land

The best things to do in Hervey Bay come down to two headliners and a long, easy supporting cast. From mid-July to late October, humpback whales rest in the bay, and a half-day whale watch from Urangan starts at A$119 on GetYourGuide. All year, K'gari (Fraser Island) sits 15 km offshore: a guided day there by boat or 4WD starts at A$269. Around those, Hervey Bay's attractions are low-key and cheap — an 868-metre pier, a 15 km waterfront path, free botanic gardens, sunset cruises from A$55.

Whale watching and cruises: the bay itself

Whale watching is the single biggest thing to do in Hervey Bay. The boats leave the Great Sandy Straits Marina at Urangan Boat Harbour and run north to the whale grounds off K'gari's west coast, where the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) says most sightings happen. You choose between a 3-hour fast boat (Pacific Whale Foundation, A$119), 4-hour catamarans with underwater windows (Tasman Venture, A$155) and slower full days with lunch (Freedom, Blue Dolphin).

The Hervey Bay Whale Festival adds a Blessing of the Fleet in July and a festival weekend in late August.

When the whales leave, the bay stays busy. Hervey Bay cruises cover sunset sails from A$55, dolphin and turtle trips into the Great Sandy Strait, and lunch cruises and the Milbi glass-bottom boat. The cheapest daytime cruise in the feed is a 3-hour K'gari sightseeing run with a boom net at A$60.

Snorkelling, kayaking, jet skis and fishing

Be realistic about the water sports. Hervey Bay is not a coral reef, and our snorkelling guide explains where snorkelling actually happens: mostly in the creeks on the remote K'gari day, or on the reef at Lady Elliot Island and Lady Musgrave. For paddling, Aquavue on the Torquay beachfront hires kayaks and stand-up paddle boards from A$40, Friday to Sunday; our kayaking guide covers that and the guided options.

We could not find a jet-ski tour operator with a live official website in Hervey Bay, and Queensland's licence rules are strict; the jet-ski page explains what is left. Fishing is simpler: no licence is needed in Queensland tidal waters, the pier is free, and local charters go out for whiting, flathead and Platypus Bay pelagics.

K'gari (Fraser Island): the other half of any trip

UNESCO describes K'gari as the largest sand island in the world; it is about 120 km long and World Heritage listed since 1992. It is Butchulla Country: the Butchulla people are its Traditional Owners, and the island's official name changed from Fraser Island to K'gari on 7 June 2023. • By boat to the remote west coast. A catamaran from Urangan, amphibious tenders onto the beach, snorkelling, kayaks and a dune climb at creeks like Wathumba and Bowarrady. No Lake McKenzie. See the remote west coast day.
• By 4WD bus on the east coast. Vehicle ferry from River Heads, then Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), Central Station rainforest, 75 Mile Beach, Eli Creek and the Maheno wreck. See the 4WD east coast day.
• Two to five days. Beach-house or resort nights, Lake Wabby and the Champagne Pools; see multi-day tours.

Hervey Bay attractions on land

Urangan Pier. The council's figure is 868 metres. Built between 1913 and 1917 to ship sugar, coal and timber, it lost its outer end in 1985 and is now a free walk and a popular fishing platform. Go at sunrise or late afternoon.

The Esplanade and pathway. A recreation pathway runs about 15 km along the waterfront through Point Vernon, Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan, and a 14 km trail follows the old pier railway inland. Hire a bike or just walk a section.

Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens. In Urangan: 26 hectares, open daily 6 am to 7 pm, free. The Orchid House holds about 5,500 orchids and opens Monday to Friday, 9 am to 2:30 pm, also free.

WetSide water park. A council-run water playground on the foreshore at Main Street and the Esplanade in Pialba. Entry is free; the slides cost A$8 for 10 rides. It closes every winter for maintenance, from May until mid-September. Outside the school holidays it opens Wednesday to Sunday, and repair works can cut the days further, so check the council page before promising the kids.

Markets at the Pier. A community market at Pier Park, Pilot Street, Urangan, beside the pier, every Saturday from 7 am to 12:30 pm, with Wednesday markets for part of the year.

Hervey Bay Regional Gallery. 166 Old Maryborough Road, Pialba, with a Butchulla Seasonal Garden around the building. Open Tuesday to Friday 10 am–4 pm and weekends 10 am–2 pm, closed Mondays.

Reefworld Aquarium. A small natural-seawater aquarium on the Urangan foreshore, founded in 1979, with daily feeds of green turtles, sharks and reef fish and a touch tank. Its own site lists 9:30 am to 4 pm, 7 days (except Christmas Day and Anzac Day), with entry A$25 for adults and A$15 for children 3–14. The site carries no dated notices, so ring before you go. The old Vic Hislop shark show, by contrast, closed in 2016.

Rainy-day, evening and scenic-flight ideas

Rain is less of a problem than wind here: boat trips go in drizzle and get cancelled for rough water. For a wet afternoon, the options are axe throwing (A$55 for 1 hour 15 minutes at a waterfront venue), the Regional Gallery, or The Story Bank in Maryborough, P.L. Travers' birthplace (adult A$15, closed Mondays).

Seeing the bay from above is the best view of all: sand banks, K'gari's west coast and, in season, whales. The GetYourGuide helicopter flights run 15 minutes (A$180) or 30 minutes (A$340). Things to do near Hervey Bay

• Bundaberg: the Bundaberg Rum distillery tour, and from early November to late March the ranger-led turtle nights at Mon Repos, about 2 hours' drive away.
• Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay: the southern gateway to K'gari via Inskip Point, and morning dolphin feeding at Tin Can Bay.
• The Great Barrier Reef: Lady Elliot Island is about a 40-minute flight from Hervey Bay Airport; Lady Musgrave is a boat day from Bundaberg (A$345).
• Australia Zoo, near Beerwah, is about an hour north of Brisbane, so it fits the drive to or from Brisbane better than a day trip.

The calendar shapes everything. July to October is whale season and the driest time of year: August and September average under four rain days a month at Hervey Bay Airport, but the mornings drop to around 10 °C, so bring a warm layer for the boat. November to March is hot and wetter, with maximums around 28–30 °C. That is the time for WetSide, beach cruises and turtles at Mon Repos, and there is a chance of storms. April to June is cooler and drier than summer, good for K'gari and cruises.
