Whale watching in Hervey Bay is the reason many people drive the 3.5 hours up from Brisbane. Between mid-July and late October, humpback whales heading south to Antarctica stop in the sheltered water between K'gari (Fraser Island) and the Queensland mainland, and a fleet of whale cruises goes out to meet them from the Urangan marina, twice a day.

Why Hervey Bay is one of the best places to watch humpbacks
Most of Australia's east coast sees humpbacks swimming past. Hervey Bay is different because a share of them stops. The Queensland Government says about a quarter of the population enters Hervey Bay on the southward migration. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) calls the bay a resting area for humpbacks on their migration from the Great Barrier Reef to Antarctica.
The research wording is careful, and so are we. The World Cetacean Alliance describes Hervey Bay as a stopover early in the southern migration. It says the bay is neither the end of the journey nor a calving or breeding area. Visit Fraser Coast calls it "a rare stopover site". So Hervey Bay is a rare stopover early in the southern migration. That does not make it the only place in the world where humpbacks pause.
Three things make that pause good for you:
- Shelter. QPWS says the bay is relatively sheltered from surf and wind by K'gari. Flatter water means a steadier deck and whales that are easier to see.
- Behaviour. The whales come in to rest and socialise rather than travel straight past. Operators report many curious, playful sub-adults early in the season; later, mothers with calves arrive.
- History and rules. Hervey Bay's whale-watching code of practice, first developed in 1989, became the basis for national and worldwide rules. The number of whale-watch vessels allowed in the marine park is capped.
In October 2019 the World Cetacean Alliance named Hervey Bay and The Bluff in Durban, South Africa, as the world's first Whale Heritage Sites. It was a joint first. The programme has since been renamed Whale Heritage Areas, and the listing is now the Hervey Bay Whale Heritage Area.
What a Hervey Bay whale watching tour looks like
A standard trip is a half day: pick-up from your accommodation, a crossing of the bay while morning or afternoon tea is served, then time with the whales, then back. Most sightings are on the eastern side of the bay, close to K'gari's west coast. The Great Sandy Marine Park manages those waters.

Afternoon departures follow the same pattern from 1:30 pm.
Times are typical for the 4-hour morning trip and vary by operator, whales and weather.
Once the boat is among the whales, Queensland's rules set the pace. Boats slow to 6 knots within 300 m of a whale. They stay out of a 100 m zone around it, which stretches to 300 m in front of and behind the whale. A boat may not enter that 300 m caution zone if three boats are already in it. If a whale comes closer on its own, the skipper cuts the engines or disengages the gears. That is how the close encounters you see in photos happen: the whale chooses them.
How to choose a whale cruise in Hervey Bay
Five questions sort out most of the choice.
1. How long? The shortest trip is Pacific Whale Foundation's 3-hour small-group whale watch. Most cruises are 4 hours. Whalesong's morning trip runs 5 hours with lunch. Freedom's cruise is 6 hours (9:30 am–3:30 pm). Blue Dolphin's full day runs about eight (7:30 am–3:30 pm). More time on the water means more time with whales, but also more time in the wind. 2. Big boat or small? Hervey Bay's whale fleet runs from Blue Dolphin, an 11.6 m sailing catamaran that takes around 24, to the 24 m Spirit of Hervey Bay. Pacific Whale Foundation uses a 12 m rigid inflatable (a fast open boat) that takes up to about 40 (its pages give 38 to 40). Big catamarans have more deck space, toilets and a steadier ride. 3. Underwater windows? Tasman Venture's half-day boat has an underwater viewing window and a hydrophone. Spirit of Hervey Bay has underwater viewing areas in each hull. They are good for kids and on days when the whales are curious around the hull.
4. Food? A half day usually includes morning or afternoon tea. Whalesong includes a meal on its whale cruises. Freedom and Blue Dolphin include a buffet lunch.
5. A swim? If swimming with a whale matters to you, go in July or August on a trip that holds the permit, and treat the swim as a bonus. The swim-with-whales guide explains the conditions.

The two longer days are Freedom Whale Watch's 6-hour Whale Odyssey on Freedom III (A$195) and Blue Dolphin Marine Tours' full-day Exclusive Whale Watch Encounter on its sailing catamaran (A$210). Sighting guarantees: what "guaranteed" means
When a Hervey Bay whale cruise says "guaranteed sightings", it means a free trip back if you see nothing. It never means a refund. Each operator's own wording is below.

Two practical points. A return ticket only helps if you are still in town, so book your whale cruise early in your stay. Also check the dates, because several guarantees cover only the middle of the season.

The Queensland Government names August to October as the main whale-watching window. Within that, the season changes character. July and August bring younger whales and mature females with immature whales, often playful and curious. From September, mothers with newborn calves arrive and increasingly dominate the bay into October. BoM records show August and September as the driest months at Hervey Bay Airport.
Queensland's spring school holidays fall in late September and early October, which is when boats book out first. The Queensland Government also says whales are best watched in calm conditions, most likely in the morning before the wind picks up. If you have a choice, take a morning departure. Where whale tours leave from, and getting there
Hervey Bay's whale boats leave from Urangan, at the eastern end of the Esplanade. Tasman Venture, Whalesong, Blue Dolphin, Freedom, Pacific Whale Foundation and Hervey Bay Whale Watch all go from the Great Sandy Straits Marina on Buccaneer Drive. Spirit of Hervey Bay gives its address as Whale Bay Marina, Buccaneer Drive. Boat Club Adventure Cruises boards at the Hervey Bay Boat Club. From Brisbane it is about a 3.5-hour drive up the Bruce Highway. Hervey Bay Airport is about 10 minutes by car from the Esplanade. Do not confuse the marina with River Heads, about 20 minutes south, where the K'gari vehicle ferries and 4WD tours leave. Is a half day or full day whale watch better?
For most people a half day of three to four hours is enough: you get real time with the whales without a long day at sea.
