K'gari (Fraser Island) has officially been named K'gari since 7 June 2023, and most operators now use both names. UNESCO describes it as the largest sand island in the world; it is about 120 km long and sits roughly 15 km off the Hervey Bay coast. Below: what each kind of tour really covers, what it misses, and the rules that apply once you land.
K'gari or Fraser Island? The name and the Butchulla people
The Butchulla people are the Traditional Owners of K'gari. Queensland recognised them as Traditional Owners in 2014, the same year a native title consent determination was made over K'gari. QPWS signs greet visitors in Butchulla with "Galangoor djali!" — good day, welcome.
The renaming happened in steps: part of Great Sandy National Park became "K'gari (Fraser Island)" in 2017, the World Heritage Area was renamed in 2021, and the island itself officially became K'gari on 7 June 2023. The "Fraser" came from Captain James Fraser, whose ship the Stirling Castle was wrecked in 1836.
One correction you will need: K'gari does not "mean paradise", whatever some brochures say. The Queensland Government says the word has no meaning; it is the name of a white spirit who, in the Butchulla creation story, helped make the land and became the island. It is pronounced roughly "GUR-rie" — the K is silent.
K'gari has been World Heritage listed since 1992. UNESCO cites more than 250 km of beaches, more than 40 km of coloured sand cliffs and half of the world's perched freshwater dune lakes. The biggest of those is Lake Boomanjin at almost 200 ha, not Lake McKenzie, which is the most visited.

From A$349By boat to the west coast. Boat tours leave the Great Sandy Straits Marina at Urangan and cross to the sheltered western side. The full-day trip, run by Tasman Venture, lands by amphibious tender at up to three of Wathumba, Awinya and Bowarrady creeks for snorkelling, kayaking and a dune climb. By 4WD to the east coast. 4WD tours pick you up in Hervey Bay and cross on the vehicle ferry from River Heads, about 20 minutes south of town, to Kingfisher Bay. From there a high-clearance tour vehicle takes the sand tracks to the classic sights: Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), the rainforest at Central Station, 75 Mile Beach, Eli Creek and the Maheno wreck. - Remote K'gari by boat (A$269, ~9 h). The best-reviewed option (★4.9 from 1,318 reviews). Morning tea, buffet lunch, afternoon tea, snorkelling gear, kayaks and tubes included; capped at 35 guests unless a larger boat is substituted.
- K'gari's icons in a day (A$279, 9 h). The most-reviewed K'gari product (★4.6 from 2,690), run by K'gari Explorer Tours (formerly Fraser Explorer Tours). This is the classic Fraser Island bus tour: 40-seat 4WD coaches, the 8:30 am ferry from River Heads, then Central Station, Lake McKenzie, 75 Mile Beach, Eli Creek, the Maheno and the Pinnacles coloured sands, with a buffet lunch at K'gari Beach Resort.
- Day trip with ferry and lunch (A$310, 11 h). Run by Fraser Experience Tours as its K'gari Escape Tour: no more than 20 guests in a 4WD bus, much the same sights, pick-ups from about 7:10 am and back around 6:15–6:30 pm. No children under 4 on this bus.
- Butchulla cultural day (A$349, 8 h 30 min). Run by K'gari Cultural Tours, a Butchulla Enterprises business, from River Heads with Butchulla guides. Listed on GetYourGuide with no reviews yet.
- Half-day beach cruise (A$160, ~5 h). Run by Whalesong outside whale season: a west-coast beach, kayaks, snorkelling and tube rides, with a BBQ lunch.
Booking direct is also possible. K'gari Explorer's own site lists its day tour "From" A$279 per adult, the same as GetYourGuide. If you are staying on the island, Kingfisher Bay Resort sells a Beauty Spots 4WD tour from the resort itself, from A$278 per adult in low season. Fraser Experience Tours also runs smaller 10-seat and 4-seat days direct.
Coming up the coast from the south? K'gari tours also leave from Rainbow Beach, the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, using the short Inskip Point barge to Hook Point at the island's southern tip. From Hervey Bay, though, River Heads and the Urangan marina are the gateways, and a Hervey Bay base lets you pair K'gari with a whale trip or a bay cruise on the next day.
On a 4WD day you will stop at the Maheno, a 1905 trans-Tasman liner and First World War hospital ship that came ashore in a 1935 cyclone. It is a beach pedestrian area: QPWS prohibits access within 3 metres of the wreck, so no climbing. You will also see signs that the Tukkee Wurroo (Indian Head) walking track is currently closed because of severe erosion, until further notice.
2-day, 3-day and longer K'gari tours
One day on K'gari means a lot of time in a vehicle. Two or more days let a tour reach the central and northern sights at a sensible pace — Lake Wabby under the Hammerstone Sandblow, the Champagne Pools — and sleep on the island.

The range runs from a 2-day tour at A$549 to a 5-day tour at A$1,022, and none of them camps. Two operators supply them:
- K'gari Explorer Tours runs the coach-based tours: the 2-day (the A$549 fare matches its shared-dormitory option at K'gari Beach Resort, adding Lake Wabby and the Champagne Pools), the "one night each side" 3-day, and the 4- and 5-day tours, with nights at Kingfisher Bay Resort and K'gari Beach Resort.
- Fraser Dingo 4WD Adventures, a family Hervey Bay business, runs the 2- and 3-day beach-house tag-along tours, where you drive a 4WD (drivers 21+) in a guided convoy of up to 7 guests per vehicle, plus a guided 2-day walk with bags carried.

Two notes for walkers: the long K'gari Great Walk is generally open only from 1 March to 31 October because of fire risk, and QPWS currently has maintenance works on the Lake Wabby walk — check park alerts before you go.
Ferries, permits and driving K'gari yourself
If you would rather drive, it is doable but not casual:

Dingo safety and island rules
Wongari is the Butchulla word QPWS uses for the island's dingoes; a population study estimated about 200 on K'gari. The rules below apply on every tour, and on guided trips the crew manages food and rubbish for you.
A few more QPWS rules that catch visitors out:
- No ocean swimming. There are no patrolled beaches on K'gari, and QPWS advises against swimming in the ocean because of rips and sharks. That includes 75 Mile Beach. Swim in the lakes and creeks instead, and never dive in.
- No soap, sunscreen or insect repellent in lakes and streams.
- Drones are banned around Lake McKenzie and in all camping areas.
When to go to K'gari
K'gari is open every day of the year, so any month works. Hervey Bay's driest months are July to September; January to March are the wettest on the island. How long is the ferry from Hervey Bay to Fraser Island?

Everyone needs a ticket booked before arriving. Boat tours to the west coast leave from the Urangan marina instead and do not use the ferry.
