Hervey Bay whale watching prices, deals and discounts

Whale watching in Hervey Bay costs A$119 to A$160 per adult for a half day on GetYourGuide, A$195 to A$210 for a longer day, and A$269 for Tasman Venture's day that combines whales with remote K'gari (Fraser Island). Prices checked regularly. The cheapest trip is 3 hours; the dearest half day includes a meal.

Operators do not discount heavily, and no one sells a whale trip for a third of the price. The real savings come from family fares, local and member discounts, booking online direct in a couple of cases, and picking the right length of trip. Below is the full ladder, then the discounts that actually exist, then the fine print.

What each price level gets you

Budget (A$119–A$120). The two cheapest trips are very different. Pacific Whale Foundation's 3-hour trip runs on a 12 m rigid inflatable that takes about 40 people, low to the water and quick to the whales, with a marine scientist on board and a free drink and cookie. It takes no children under 5 and no wheelchairs. Boat Club's 4-hour trip uses a 20 m catamaran that can carry up to 95, with tea and biscuits and courtesy transfers. Both give a free return ticket if you see no whales within their guarantee dates.

Mid (A$155–A$160). The extra A$35 to A$40 buys an extra hour over the inflatable, better food and better viewing. Tasman Venture's catamaran has a water-level platform, an underwater viewing window and a hydrophone, and the fare includes hotel pick-up from selected accommodation plus two light meal services. Whalesong's A$160 includes a real meal. This is where most people should book.

Premium (A$195–A$269). You pay for hours, lunch and fewer people, not for more whales. Freedom's 6-hour cruise takes up to 48; Blue Dolphin's sailing catamaran takes around 24. Neither gives the free-return guarantee the half days do. Tasman's A$269 day is really two trips: whales plus a landing on K'gari's remote west coast.

Direct fares, child and family prices

Direct fares from the operators' own sites, where they publish current ones. Child ages differ between boats, so check which fare your kids fall into.

Spirit's tours page also shows "From A$140" for the half day without saying which fare that is. Whalesong and Blue Dolphin publish fare tables that are still labelled for an earlier season, so we do not quote them as current. Whalesong's structure is adult, concession, teen (15–17), child (4–14), free infant and two family fares. Blue Dolphin's whale day has a child fare for ages 8–14 and family fares for two adults with two or three children over 8.

GetYourGuide vs booking direct. Prices are close. Tasman's half day is A$155 either way. Pacific Whale Foundation is A$119 on GetYourGuide and A$119.70 online direct. Boat Club is A$120 on GetYourGuide and from A$110 direct. Tasman's K'gari and whales day is from A$259 direct and A$269 on GetYourGuide. Booking direct can matter for extras: Freedom gives return bus transfers only to direct bookings, and Whalesong gives direct bookers on-board credit or a gift.

Whale watching discounts and discount vouchers that actually exist

• Online discount, Pacific Whale Foundation: 10% off the whale watch when booked on its website, and 25% off its 2.5-hour sunset whale watch (A$99.75 online instead of A$133).
• Local postcodes, Pacific Whale Foundation: residents of postcodes 4655, 4650, 4659, 4662, 4570, 4880 and 4581 get 20% off full price by phone.
• Boat Club membership: Hervey Bay Boat Club membership is A$5 a year, and members save on cruises. Non-members are welcome on board.
• Companion Card: Whalesong charges Companion Card holders half fare, and Tasman Venture lists a Companion Card ticket type.
• Family fares: most boats sell a two-adult, two-child ticket, and some a three-child one. Spirit's family ticket (A$435) is A$25 less than two adults and two children at single fares.
• Promo codes: at the time of checking, Spirit of Hervey Bay's homepage was advertising a promo code for bookings made by 16 October. Codes like this are temporary; check the homepage.
• RACQ: RACQ's member-benefits page links to a member-discounted experiences portal. We could not load its Hervey Bay whale listings, so we cannot confirm a saving. Members should log in and compare.

Gift vouchers are not discount vouchers. Spirit's gift vouchers, for example, are sold at the full fare. GetYourGuide's price-match promise pays the difference if the same trip with the same operator is cheaper elsewhere online, but it excludes member, loyalty and group rates.

Sighting guarantees: a free re-trip, not a refund

Every guarantee in Hervey Bay is a second trip, never your money back, and several only apply between set dates. The operators' own wording:

• Tasman Venture (half day only): "you will receive an open dated return ticket if you do not see any whales."
• Whalesong: "you will be given a free return cruise until you see whales … No refunds will be given." The voucher can go to a friend or be swapped for another cruise.
• Spirit of Hervey Bay: "if no whales are sighted on your tour you will receive a free return cruise ticket to go again."
• Boat Club: guaranteed "between 23 July and 7 October"; outside those dates there is no guarantee, and "No refunds will be issued."
• Pacific Whale Foundation: guaranteed from mid-July to 9 October, with a "free return ticket good for up to one year."
• Hervey Bay Whale Watch: your ticket stays valid for its other whale cruises until humpbacks are sighted, subject to availability.
• Freedom: "whale sightings cannot be guaranteed", but there is a "rain-check" free return cruise. It is not transferable and must be used in the same season.
• Blue Dolphin: no guarantee — "there is no guarantee on wild animals".
• Whalesong pre-season search: no guarantee.

A return trip is only worth something if you can use it. If you leave town the next day, book early in your stay.

When prices dip, and when to book

None of the operator fare pages we checked lists a cheaper early- or late-season fare. What does change is the guarantee: Boat Club's runs 23 July to 7 October and Pacific Whale Foundation's mid-July to 9 October, so trips at either end of the season go without it. Whalesong's pre-season search is A$15 cheaper than its main-season cruise, but it runs before the main run of whales and carries no guarantee.

Two cheaper options: Hervey Bay Whale Watch's afternoon trip is A$10 less than its morning one, and Pacific Whale Foundation's sunset whale watch has the biggest online saving. Mornings are usually calmer, though, according to the Queensland Government. Book well ahead for Queensland school holidays and the Whale Festival weekend in late August. How GetYourGuide cancellation works

GetYourGuide's general terms say that, unless the product page, the operator's terms or your voucher say otherwise, you get a full refund if you cancel more than 24 hours before the start, and nothing inside 24 hours or for a no-show. Four whale listings show "free cancellation" in the feed: Freedom's Whale Odyssey, Blue Dolphin's Exclusive Encounter, Tasman's K'gari and whales day and the 4-hour cruise with underwater windows. The other half-day listings, including Tasman's Encounter, Pacific Whale Foundation's trip and Whalesong's meal cruise, do not, so read their product pages first.

If the operator cancels because of the weather, GetYourGuide's terms say the booking price is refunded. Booking direct, the rules vary: Pacific Whale Foundation refunds in full only if you cancel more than 48 hours out, Spirit of Hervey Bay asks for 24 hours' notice and charges no fee, and Boat Club charges 50% inside 7 days. Our call

Pay the extra A$35 for a mid-range half day: Tasman Venture's 4-hour Encounter at A$155 is the best value in the bay.

You get an extra hour over the cheapest trip, a boat with an underwater window and a water-level platform, two food services, hotel pick-up and an open-dated return ticket if you see no whales. The budget trips are fine, but they are shorter or more basic.

Skip it if the premium days if you are on a tight budget or travelling with small children; the price gap buys hours and lunch, not more whales.
