Day trips from Hervey Bay: Bundaberg, Rainbow Beach, the reef and more

Hervey Bay is a good base for day trips because most of the Fraser Coast and the Bundaberg region is within two hours' drive. Heritage Maryborough is 32 km away. Bundaberg, with its rum distillery and the Mon Repos turtle beach, is about 1 h 40 north. Rainbow Beach and the Tin Can Bay dolphins are a similar drive south-east. The southern Great Barrier Reef is a 40-minute flight or a boat trip from Bundaberg.

This guide gives realistic drive times, what each trip is actually for, and which parts need booking. The booking-heavy trips, K'gari (Fraser Island) and the whales, have their own guides: K'gari day tours and whale watching.

A note on the numbers: except where an official source gives a figure, the drive times below are our own route estimates for a car leaving the Esplanade, without stops. Add time for roadworks, school-holiday traffic and coffee.

Day trips from Hervey Bay at a glance

Bundaberg day trip: rum, ginger beer and Bargara

Bundaberg is the most complete driving day trip from Hervey Bay. Take the Bruce Highway north (Kingfisher Bay Resort puts Bundaberg to River Heads at about 1.5 hours, which matches). The town brands itself the start of the Southern Great Barrier Reef, and the rum is the headline.

• Bundaberg Rum Visitor Experience, Hills Street, Bundaberg East. The distillery store is open Monday to Saturday 10 am–5 pm, and 10 am–4 pm on Sundays and public holidays. GetYourGuide sells a guided distillery tour with a tasting for A$30, about an hour (prices checked regularly); the listing does not name its supplier.
• Bundaberg Brewed Drinks' Barrel: a self-guided gallery and a tasting of the ginger beer and other soft drinks, A$23. This one suits kids and drivers.
• Hinkler Hall of Aviation, the Riverside Parklands and the botanic gardens, all on the regional tourism body's list.
• Bargara, the beach town on the coast east of Bundaberg, for lunch by the water and a swim.

Mon Repos: turtles at night, November to late March

Mon Repos Conservation Park, 14 km east of Bundaberg, has the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland. QPWS rangers run Turtle Encounter tours every night from November to late March. You see nesting loggerheads from November to early February and hatchlings from late January to the end of March. Tickets go on sale in June, and online booking is essential.

Be clear about what a turtle night involves. Up to 300 people a night wait at the Turtle Centre in five groups of 60, and each group is called to the beach when a turtle arrives. QPWS says the whole visit can take up to six hours and some groups go down as late as midnight. From Hervey Bay that means a drive home in the small hours, so stay the night in Bargara or Bundaberg. By day the Turtle Centre is open 9 am–2 pm, and entry to the hall is free, but there are no live turtles on display.

Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay: dolphins, then the sandblow

This is the nature day, and it starts early. Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach sit side by side at the top of the Cooloola coast, and both are about 1 h 35–1 h 50 from Hervey Bay via Maryborough.

Tin Can Bay dolphin feeding (8 am). Wild Australian humpback dolphins come in through Schnapper Creek towards Norman Point most mornings. At Barnacles Dolphin Centre, volunteers supervise visitors who hand-feed them fish supplied by the centre. The Visit Tin Can Bay directory says the centre opens 7–9 am and feeding starts at 8 am, with no bookings. It lists A$15 to watch and A$20 to feed, but older listings show lower prices, so phone (07) 5486 4899 before you go. The dolphins are wild and may not come in, and touching them is not allowed. To be there by 7:45 am, leave Hervey Bay by about 6:15.

Carlo Sandblow. From Rainbow Beach, QPWS's Carlo Sandblow walk runs 2.8 km one way (allow an hour) from the Rainbow Beach Information Centre. It ends on a bare sand mass with 180-degree views over Rainbow Beach, the coloured sands, Double Island Point, K'gari and Inskip Peninsula. On a hot day you can start from the Carlo Sandblow car park instead for a much shorter walk.

The beach and the coloured sands. A GetYourGuide tour combines a 4WD run along the beach with a kayak paddle looking for dolphins, turtles and, in season, migrating whales. It is A$149 for 3 hours. Do not drive your own 2WD on the beach. Inskip Point, about 15 minutes from Rainbow Beach, is where the barge crosses to the southern tip of K'gari (about 10 minutes). That crossing is for 4WDs with a QPWS vehicle permit, not a detour for a day trip.

Maryborough and Childers: the heritage day

Maryborough is 32 km from Hervey Bay and the easiest trip on this page. P.L. Travers, who wrote Mary Poppins, was born in the former Australian Joint Stock Bank at 331 Kent Street. The building is now the Story Bank, open Tuesday to Friday 9:30 am–3:30 pm and weekends 9:30 am–2 pm (closed Mondays). Entry is A$15 per adult, A$5 per child (5–17) and A$35 for a family. The bronze Mary Poppins statue stands outside. Tourism and Events Queensland also lists a mural trail, a historic pub trail and the Military and Colonial Museum. Thursday is market day.

Childers is on the Bruce Highway about an hour from Hervey Bay, so it pairs with Bundaberg or makes a short trip on its own. Walk Churchill Street past the Paragon Theatre, the Old Pharmacy museum and the Grand Hotel. The regional tourism body also lists Snakes Downunder Reptile Park, local wineries and farm stalls on the red-soil farms around town.

The reef in a day: Lady Elliot or Lady Musgrave

Hervey Bay itself has no coral reef. For real coral you need to go north to the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, and there are two ways to do it in a day.

Lady Elliot Island by air. The island resort's day trip flies daily (except Christmas Day) from Hervey Bay Airport: check in at 7:40 am for the 8:10 am flight, and the return leaves the island at 4 pm. The flight takes about 40 minutes and gives you roughly 7 hours on the island. It includes a glass-bottom boat or guided snorkel tour, snorkel gear and a short wetsuit, a buffet lunch and an afternoon guided activity. It is sold only by the resort (the flights are Seair Pacific charters), and its site lists A$595 per adult and A$445 per child (3–12), fuel levy included. The luggage limit is a small 4 kg backpack. Lady Musgrave Island by boat. The GetYourGuide tour runs a catamaran from Burnett Heads near Bundaberg. It includes lunch, snorkelling gear and a guided island walk, and costs A$345 for 10 hours. Burnett Heads is about 2 hours' drive from Hervey Bay, so the only comfortable way to do it is to sleep in Bundaberg the night before.

Hervey Bay to Australia Zoo: a road trip, not a day trip

This is the question the client plan answered with "2.5 hours", and we could not find that figure published anywhere. The zoo's own page puts it about 60 minutes' drive north of Brisbane, on Steve Irwin Way at Beerwah. Coming from the north, you leave the Bruce Highway at exit 188 (Landsborough/Steve Irwin Way). By our route estimate Hervey Bay to the zoo is about 220 km and close to 3 hours each way without stops.

The zoo is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. A return day trip therefore means about 6 hours in the car on top of up to 8 hours at the zoo, which is a long day for kids and drivers. It is much better as a stop on the drive between Brisbane and Hervey Bay: leave the zoo at closing time and you are in Hervey Bay for a late dinner. Mary Valley Rattler and Gympie

The Mary Valley Rattler is a heritage steam train from the historic Gympie Station, about 1 h 45 from Hervey Bay. Its Classic Rattler Run goes out through the Mary Valley to Amamoor, where the engine turns on a restored turntable, and runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays. GetYourGuide sells the ticket for A$69 (about 3 hours). Prams do not fit through the carriage doors, so bring a carrier for babies. Gympie is also on the way to Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay if you want a two-stop day.

Planning tips for road trips from Hervey Bay

• Start early. The dolphins at Tin Can Bay feed at 8 am, and the Story Bank shuts at 2 pm on weekends. Aim to arrive where you are going by mid-morning.
• Mind the season. Turtle nights only run from November to late March. Summer (December–February) is hot and brings storms. The BoM averages for Hervey Bay are about 30°C maximum in January and 22°C in July.
• Pair trips by direction. North: Childers and Bundaberg. South-east: Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach. South: Maryborough, then Gympie.
• Leave whale days alone. From mid-July to late October, a morning whale watch from Urangan is the best thing you can do in the region. Put the driving days either side of it. See the whale season guide.
• Booking. Book the reef, the Rattler and turtle nights ahead. The rest is walk-up.

Our call

If you only have one spare day, drive to Bundaberg: do the rum distillery, have lunch by the water at Bargara, and in turtle season stay for a night at Mon Repos.

It is the fullest day for the drive (about 1 h 40 each way). It works in any weather, it suits kids and adults, and from November to late March it can end at the biggest turtle rookery on the eastern Australian mainland. For the reef, the Lady Musgrave cruise leaves from Burnett Heads nearby.

Skip it if Skip Australia Zoo as a return day trip. It is close to 6 hours of driving for a zoo that shuts at 5 pm, so do it on the way to or from Brisbane.
