Hervey Bay at night: sunset cruises, the pier, dinner and turtle nights

Most things to do in Hervey Bay at night start just before dark. The town sits on a sheltered bay facing K'gari (Fraser Island), and the evening boats from the Urangan marinas are out on the bay and the Great Sandy Strait as the sun goes down. That is why the answer to "what to do in the evening" is nearly always a sunset cruise, followed by dinner near the water.

After about 9 pm the town is quiet: this is a holiday and retirement coast, not a party strip. That suits couples and families. Below are the sunset cruises compared (what the "champagne" really includes), a suggested evening, where to eat, the pier at dusk, and the one big seasonal night out, the Mon Repos turtles.

Sunset cruises: the main event

Three sunset trips are sold on GetYourGuide, all leaving from Urangan. They differ more than the prices suggest.

• Twilight Bay Cruise, Boat Club Adventure Cruises (A$55, about 2 hours). It runs on M.V. Amaroo, a 20 m catamaran with three viewing decks, from the Hervey Bay Boat Club on Buccaneer Drive. Departure is between about 3:30 and 4:30 pm depending on the season, and it runs all year. Included: a complimentary glass of bubbles and a small plate of nibbles. Other drinks, alcoholic or soft, are bought from the canteen on board. The operator's own terms give one free child under 14 per paying adult; on GetYourGuide, check the child fare when you pick a date. It is the longest and cheapest of the three.
• Milbi sunset with champagne and prawns, Hervey Bay Eco Marine Tours (A$95, 1.5 hours). It uses Milbi, the operator's glass-bottom boat, which takes at most 28 guests, from Fisherman's Wharf on Jetty Road. It leaves at 4:30 pm in winter and 5 pm in summer. Included: fresh local king prawns, a grazing platter and a glass of champagne. The operator bills it as the only sunset tour in Hervey Bay that docks on the beach.
• Champagne Sunset Sail, Blue Dolphin Marine Tours (A$100, 90 minutes). It uses an 11.6 m sailing catamaran limited to about 24 guests, from the Great Sandy Straits Marina. It runs from November to June. Included: canapés and complimentary drinks (beer, sparkling wine, wine, cider or soft drink). It is the most intimate option and the pick for an anniversary.

Book direct with Whalesong Cruises and there is a fourth option: a 1.5-hour sunset cruise with seafood canapés and one drink. It leaves at 5:30 pm from November to March and 4:30 pm from April to June. The operator's page lists A$95 per adult (last season's price) and says plainly that it "is NOT a dinner cruise". Prices on this page are checked regularly.

Sunset cruises in whale season

From mid-July to late October, the late whale trips double as sunset trips:

• Whalesong's Afternoon + Sunset whale watch runs about 2 pm to 6 pm and includes afternoon tea and dinner on board. It is the nearest thing Hervey Bay has to a dinner cruise, A$160 on GetYourGuide.
• Pacific Whale Foundation's Sunset Whale Watch lasts about 2.5 hours on its fast inflatable boat and allows BYO alcohol (up to three standard drinks). It is booked direct, where the operator lists A$99.75 online per adult.

A suggested evening in Hervey Bay

Queensland does not use daylight saving, so sunset times swing through the year. By our calculation for Hervey Bay, the sun sets around 5:05 pm in June, about 5:40 pm in September and about 6:40 pm in January. The cruises move their departures to match. Here is how a winter evening can run.

1. 3:45 pm
   Check in at the Boat Club marina

   Boat Club asks for 30 minutes before departure. The courtesy bus can collect you from your accommodation.

2. 4:15 pm
   Twilight cruise leaves Urangan

   Departure moves between about 3:30 and 4:30 pm with the season; your voucher has the exact time.

3. 4:30 pm
   Glass of bubbles and a small plate of nibbles

   Further drinks are from the canteen on board.

4. 5:05 pm
   Sunset over the Great Sandy Strait

   Mid-winter; in midsummer the sun sets after 6:30 pm, so everything shifts later.

5. 6:15 pm
   Back at the marina

   The cruise runs about 2 hours.

6. 6:30 pm
   Dinner at the harbour

   The Boat Club's restaurant is at the same marina; Urangan Harbour has other waterfront restaurants.

7. 8:00 pm
   A film or a walk

   The Boat Club has twin cinemas. Or take the short drive to Urangan Pier for a walk out over the water.

A suggested winter evening with typical times, not a timetable. Times change through the year and between operators.

The Urangan Pier and the Esplanade at dusk

Urangan Pier is free and needs no booking. It is 868 m of timber jetty over the tidal flats at the eastern end of the Esplanade, built between 1913 and 1917 to export sugar, timber and coal, and shortened in 1985. Tourism and Events Queensland's own Hervey Bay itinerary suggests a sunset stroll along the pier and fish and chips nearby. Before you go, check the Fraser Coast council's notices for any works closures.

The Recreation Pathway runs about 15 km along the Esplanade, past the foreshore suburbs of Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan. On a warm evening, walking or cycling a stretch of it before dinner is the cheapest way to watch the light change over the bay.

Dinner and drinks by the water

Tourism and Events Queensland's list of places to eat in Hervey Bay includes:

• Waterfront restaurants at Urangan Marina, where local seafood is the focus.
• Enzo's on the Beach, casual dining and sunset drinks on the sand.
• The Dock Bar & Restaurant, modern Australian with a seafood focus, facing the marina sunset.
• Banksia Seafood and Grill, seafood and steak.
• Hervey Bay Boat Club, classic club dining with water views. Its Hervey Bay itinerary also suggests fish and chips by the pier, eaten on the foreshore at golden hour.

We have not checked evening opening hours for each venue, and they vary by day and season, so book or phone ahead.

The Hervey Bay Boat Club is the easiest night out in one place. All are welcome, not just members. It serves all-day dining (breakfast, lunch and dinner), has a deck bar and cocktail lounge, puts on free live music, and has twin cinemas showing current films. Turtle nights at Mon Repos (November to March)

Watching a loggerhead turtle lay her eggs, or hatchlings racing for the sea, is the most memorable night out in the region. It happens at Mon Repos Conservation Park, 14 km east of Bundaberg. Mon Repos has the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland.

• Season: Turtle Encounter tours run nightly from November to late March (the centre is closed on 24, 25 and 31 December). You see nesting from November to early February and hatchlings from late January to the end of March. Between late January and late February you are taken to whichever is happening.
• Booking: online only, and essential. Tickets go on sale in June, and school holidays and weekends sell out. QPWS lists A$31.30 per adult, A$16.15 per child (5–17) and A$75.50 for a family of four; under-5s go free.
• The wait: up to 300 people a night in five groups of 60, called to the beach when turtles arrive. The briefing is at 7 pm. The first group often goes down between 7 and 7:30 pm, but QPWS has recorded groups going as late as midnight. Allow up to six hours.
• Fitness: up to 1.6 km of walking on soft sand in the dark, then up to two hours on your feet. Conventional wheelchairs cannot manage it. QPWS says the tours are not recommended for young children.

Mon Repos is about 1 h 50 by road from Hervey Bay, so a turtle night means a drive home around midnight or later. Romantic things to do in Hervey Bay

• The champagne sail. Blue Dolphin's 90-minute sunset sail (A$100, November to June) is small and quiet, with drinks included.
• A private charter. A private sailing charter from Urangan (4–8 hours) is listed at A$1,800 on GetYourGuide. That is the price for the whole boat, not per person, and the day is tailored to you.
• A night on K'gari. Stay at Kingfisher Bay Resort on the island's west coast, where the jetty faces the sunset. Its Illumina light and laser show runs nightly, lasts about 23 minutes and costs A$39 per adult, but only resort guests can book it.
• Watching the stars. The simplest option is the beach or the pier, away from the Esplanade lights on a moonless night. We could not find a public stargazing tour in Hervey Bay that we could verify, so treat "astronomy tours" you see listed with caution.

Rainy evenings and something different

• Axe throwing. Hervey Bay's axe-throwing venue sells a 75-minute session for A$55 on GetYourGuide. It works as a group or date activity when the weather turns; check its evening session times when you book.
• The cinema. The Boat Club's twin cinemas show new releases, and dinner is in the same building.
• Early nights for early trips. Whale boats and K'gari tours leave early, many between 7 and 8:30 am. If you have one booked, the best plan may be the sunset cruise, dinner, and bed.

Our call

Book the Boat Club's two-hour Twilight Cruise if you want the most time on the water for the money. Pick Blue Dolphin's Champagne Sunset Sail if the evening is a special occasion.

The twilight cruise costs A$55 on GetYourGuide, runs all year, and the operator's terms let one child under 14 travel free per paying adult. The sail is A$100 for 90 minutes on an 11.6 m catamaran limited to about 24 guests, with canapés and drinks included (November to June).

Skip it if Don't book any of them expecting an open bar or a sit-down dinner. None of Hervey Bay's sunset cruises is sold as either.
