Fishing trips and tours in Hervey Bay: charters, prices and the rules

Fishing trips and fishing tours are one of the biggest reasons people search for Hervey Bay, and one of the hardest things to book online. There is no fishing trip on GetYourGuide for Hervey Bay, several charter names in older guides no longer operate, and the prices you find are per boat as often as per person.

This guide sorts that out. It covers the charters we could verify as running, what a half day and a full day actually cost on their own sites, what you catch where and when, and the Queensland rules — licences, bag limits, closed seasons and green zones — that decide what goes in the esky. Prices are checked regularly; charter prices below are the operators' own, not ours.

Fishing charters in Hervey Bay: who is actually running

Start with what has changed, because the names people search for are not all still on the water:

• Hervey Bay Fishing Charters — marked "no longer operating" in a fishing-charter directory. Its web address now redirects to Hervey Bay Fly and Sportfishing.
• "Reef & Rainforest" — not a fishing boat. "Reef to Rainforest" is a 5-day Lady Elliot Island and K'gari (Fraser Island) package sold by the agent Experience Hervey Bay.
• The same directory also marks Bite Me Fishing Charters and Ally Jay Deep Sea Fishing Charters as closed.

Private or share, half day or full day: what a fishing trip costs

The price structure tells you who each trip suits.

Private guided charters — Hervey Bay Fly and Sportfishing, run by local guide Andrew — price by the number of anglers. One angler on a half day pays A$750; three share the boat for A$275 each. The half day works the waters around Hervey Bay, the Great Sandy Strait and the inshore reefs, and the operator calls it "a good option for families". The full day goes further along K'gari's western coastline, weather permitting. Packages include drinks, morning tea, snacks and water; lunch is extra or bring your own. All rods, reels and lures are supplied — Shimano spin gear and Sage fly outfits — though lost flies are charged. Children pay the adult price, the minimum age is 5, and a A$200 deposit holds the date. Pick-ups from K'gari or from a yacht cost A$50 more, and a share charter can be arranged if you lack the numbers.

Hot Reels Pro Fish Charters, skippered by Bob, is also private and small-group, and says it has line-fished the Fraser Coast commercially "for decades". It fishes bait and float lines, jigs, trolls and casts stickbaits, and names coral trout, red emperor, snapper, Spanish mackerel, cobia and juvenile black marlin among its targets. You keep your legal catch, and sharks are tag-and-release. Its Breaksea Spit trip is "not currently available". Cancellation is a full refund 7 or more days out, 50% between 7 and 2 days, and nothing inside 48 hours.

Princess II is the budget seat. The agent's listing: 45 ft purpose-built fishing vessel, departs Fishermans Wharf at 7:30 am and returns at 3:30 pm, daily when minimum numbers are reached (it carries 5 to 13), A$250 for every passenger. Rod, reel, tackle and bait are supplied, with a barbecue rib-fillet lunch and tea and coffee. Drinks are BYO, no glass.

The maths: for one person, Princess II is a third of the price of a private half day. For three, the private half day is cheaper per head than the share day and far more personal — but it is five and a half hours, not eight. The exact check-in point is on your booking confirmation.

What you catch in Hervey Bay, and where

Visit Fraser Coast, the regional tourism body, sums up why the area rates: warm northern and cooler southern currents overlap here, and K'gari shelters the bay. Its main grounds:

• Platypus Bay, off K'gari's west coast — sheltered, bait-rich water for pelagics: golden trevally, longtail tuna and juvenile black marlin. A favourite for lure and fly anglers.
• The Great Sandy Strait — about 70 km of flats, creeks and channels between the mainland and K'gari: whiting, flathead, barramundi, threadfin, plus prawns and mud crabs.
• Inshore reefs — natural reef, coffee rock and artificial reefs such as Roy Rufus at the top of the Strait.
• Urangan Pier — see below.
• The Mary River — barramundi and threadfin; mud crabs year-round and prawns in the wet season.
• K'gari's eastern beaches — the annual tailor run, "especially in winter". That is 4WD beach fishing on the ocean side, not a charter trip.

The charters line up with that. Hervey Bay Fly and Sportfishing targets golden and other trevally, school, spotted and Spanish mackerel, longtail and mac tuna, and reef fish such as coral trout, goldspot cod and sweetlip, mostly on lures and soft plastics.

For the regulated species, this grid shows when you may keep them under Queensland's closed seasons, not how well they bite: 2 = open all month, 1 = closed for part of the month, 0 = closed. No official source gives month-by-month catch rates for the bay, so the calendar above shows the legal side — when you may keep each species — plus the winter tailor run. Ask your skipper what is biting that week.

Queensland fishing rules: licence, bag limits and closed seasons

The good news first: you need no licence for recreational fishing in Queensland tidal waters, including all of Hervey Bay and the Strait. The rest is detail, and it applies to you as the angler whether you fish from the pier or a charter boat.

Size and possession limits for the fish you are most likely to meet (Queensland Government, tidal waters):

Closed seasons that matter here:

• Snapper and pearl perch: 15 July–15 August, east coast tidal waters.
• Barramundi: 1 November–31 January on the east coast.
• Spanish mackerel: 1–21 February and 1–21 March in the mapped southern closure areas.
• Coral reef fin fish: two five-day closures each October and November, in waters north of latitude 24°50′ S. That line runs just north of the bay, so it catches trips to the northern tip of K'gari and Breaksea Spit; ask your skipper if yours heads that way.

Green zones and the Great Sandy Marine Park

Hervey Bay, the Great Sandy Strait and the waters off K'gari all sit inside the Great Sandy Marine Park, managed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Its current zoning plan raised marine national park (green) zones from 3.9% to 12.8% of the park; 87.2% stays open to recreational fishing and crabbing.

Three practical points:

• Know the zone before you drop a line. Point Vernon is surrounded by a yellow zone — two lines, two hooks. Charter skippers work to the zoning maps; if you fish alone, carry them or use the app.
• Freshwater on K'gari is off limits. All freshwater fish on the island are protected, and fishing or collecting bait in its lakes and streams is not allowed.
• Whales and dolphins still have right of way. From mid-July to late October humpbacks share the bay; boats must stay 100 m from a whale and 50 m from a dolphin. See our whale season guide.

Fishing without a charter: Urangan Pier and boat hire

Urangan Pier is the land-based option. At 868 m it is Hervey Bay's land-based fishing platform: garfish, whiting and flathead in the shallow first channel, and mackerel, tuna, trevally and queenfish in the outer channel, drawn by bait schools around the pylons (Visit Fraser Coast).

Hire a boat if you hold a Queensland boat licence (or a recognised one). Boating Hervey Bay in Urangan hires a 4.5 m runabout for A$295 a day and a 5.5 m boat for A$495, fuel extra; each comes with a sounder and chart plotter, bait board and landing net, and fishing rods can be hired too. Not here to fish? Other ways onto the water

If only some of your group fish, or you mainly want a day on the bay, GetYourGuide has boat trips from the same marinas. Our call

For a fishing trip in Hervey Bay, book a guided half day with Hervey Bay Fly and Sportfishing if there are two or three of you; go solo or on a budget on a share day aboard Princess II.

Both are running and publish clear prices. Split three ways, a private inshore half day with all tackle is A$275 each and the boat fishes for you, not for twelve strangers. Princess II's A$250 buys a full day with bait, tackle and lunch — the best per-hour value if you do not mind sharing the rail.

Skip it if You want to book on GetYourGuide or pay by the seat for a couple of hours — no such fishing trip exists in the feed. Fish from Urangan Pier instead, or, if you only want to be out on the bay, take the private sailing charter or a sunset cruise.
