Hervey Bay cruises are not only whale boats. The humpbacks fill the marina from July to October, but the rest of the year the same bay is run by smaller trips: dolphin sails, turtle eco tours, a cheap boom-net cruise to K'gari (Fraser Island), beach days and sunset runs. Most cost between A$55 and A$160 a person and take two to five hours.

Two patterns stand out. First, the cheapest trips are on the biggest boat, the 20-metre Amaroo; the dearest are on the smallest, Blue Dolphin's sailing catamaran. Second, many of these cruises are summer products: several operators switch their boats to whale watching from July to October.

This is the main reason to go out when the whales are gone. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) lists two dolphin species as resident in the Great Sandy Marine Park, the Indo-Pacific bottlenose and the Australian humpback dolphin, plus resident loggerhead, green, hawksbill and flatback turtles, and dugong. Surveys have found some of the highest dugong densities on Queensland's east coast in Hervey Bay.
"Resident" means you have a real chance on any trip. It does not mean a sighting. No official source gives a best season for dolphins, turtles or dugong here, and none of the operators below guarantees wildlife.

Sunset and twilight cruises
Three sunset trips are bookable on GetYourGuide, each on a different kind of boat:

K'gari by boat: beach cruises and the remote west coast
You do not need a 4WD to set foot on K'gari. Three boat trips from Urangan land on or cruise the island's quiet western side:
- The half-day beach cruise — Whalesong's 5-hour K'gari Beach + BBQ trip, November to May on its site, with kayaks, snorkelling gear, tube rides and a barbecue lunch with Hervey Bay king prawns. A$160, ★4.7 from 323 reviews.

Lunch cruises and the glass-bottom boat
A proper lunch on the water in Hervey Bay usually means a whale trip or a K'gari trip, not a dedicated lunch cruise. Whalesong's whale watches include lunch or dinner, the beach cruise includes a barbecue, and the remote K'gari day serves a buffet. Milbi is Hervey Bay's only glass-bottom boat, according to its operator Hervey Bay Eco Marine Tours, and some whale boats have underwater viewing windows. Whale cruises, private charters and scenic flights
Whales (July to October). Every major operator in the marina switches to humpbacks for the season. Half-day whale watches start at A$119 on GetYourGuide and full days at A$195. If you are in town then, a whale trip is the cruise to book; see the whale watching hub and when to go.
Private charters. The only private sailing charter on GetYourGuide is A$1,800 for the whole boat for 4 to 8 hours, from Urangan. We have not confirmed which operator runs it. Blue Dolphin, Whalesong and the Boat Club also take private bookings direct.
Scenic flights. Not a cruise, but the best way to see the sand banks and K'gari's colours at once: a 15-minute helicopter flight is A$180 and a 30-minute flight A$340. More ideas are in things to do in Hervey Bay.
How to choose a Hervey Bay boat tour
Price and length are the obvious filters. Four less obvious ones matter as much.
Boat size. The Amaroo is a 20-metre catamaran that can carry up to 95; it is steady and has room to move, but it is not intimate. Blue Dolphin's 11.6-metre sailing catamaran takes about 24 and Milbi a maximum of 28, so you are closer to the water and the crew. If you are prone to seasickness, a short trip on a big catamaran in the morning is the gentlest option.
Mobility. The Boat Club says a moderate level of mobility is needed, with seven steps to the Amaroo's main cabin. Eco Marine's homepage says Milbi is fully wheelchair accessible, though its FAQ notes the bathroom has no disabled access. Whalesong advertises ramp access and an accessible toilet. Blue Dolphin publishes no wheelchair information, so ask before you book.
Children. Child fares cover ages 4–14 with the Boat Club, 4–12 with Eco Marine, and 4–14 on Blue Dolphin's dolphin sail, where under-4s travel free. Booked direct, the Boat Club's twilight cruise takes one child under 14 free per paying adult. More in Hervey Bay with kids.
Cancellation. On GetYourGuide, the terms shown at checkout apply. Booked direct, the operators differ: Eco Marine refunds in full with 24 hours' notice, Blue Dolphin with more than 48 hours (less agent commission), and the Boat Club charges 50% inside 7 days and the full fare inside 24 hours.
When to go, and the rules on the water
Outside whale season you have the most choice: the dolphin sail, the boom-net cruise, the beach cruise and the champagne sail all run in the warmer months, roughly November to May or June, alongside the year-round twilight cruise. From July to October the bay cruises thin out.

The weather favours mornings. The Bureau of Meteorology's mean 3 pm wind at Hervey Bay Airport is 21–22 km/h from November to March, against about 16 km/h in June and July, and February and March are the wettest months. The morning wildlife trips generally get the calmer water.
Wildlife rules apply to every boat and to you if you swim. Commercial crews know them; here they are so you know what a good skipper is doing when it slows down or holds off.
Where Hervey Bay cruises leave from
All the cruises on this page leave from Urangan, at the eastern end of the Esplanade, but from three different spots:
- Great Sandy Straits Marina, 17 Buccaneer Drive: Blue Dolphin, Whalesong and most whale boats.
- Hervey Bay Boat Club, Buccaneer Drive: the Amaroo (twilight and boom-net cruises).
- Fisherman's Wharf Marina, Jetty Road: Milbi (turtle and sunset cruises).
