The Hervey Bay Boat Club is a licensed members' club in Urangan, with a bistro, café, cinema, marina and fuel. It is also a genuine tour operator: its cruise arm, Boat Club Adventure Cruises, runs whale watches, a twilight cruise and a summer K'gari (Fraser Island) cruise on its brightly painted catamaran, the M.V. Amaroo. The business is owned and operated by Hervey Bay Boat Club Inc.

M.V. Amaroo: the "rainbow boat"
M.V. Amaroo is a 20-metre (66-foot) catamaran with twin Scania 350 hp engines, a cruising speed of 18 knots and three viewing decks. Its bright colours earn it the "rainbow boat" nickname. The operator's private-charter page gives a capacity of up to 95 guests, so on a busy whale day expect a full deck.

Boat Club whale watching
The whale watch is a standard 4-hour half day: out to the whale grounds, time with the pods, tea and biscuits, and back. The guarantee, from the terms: "Whale sightings are guaranteed between 23 July and 7 October. In the unlikely event that the captain is unable to locate a whale … a complimentary return ticket will be offered. No refunds will be issued." Outside that window, no guarantee applies. The operator runs whale watches from mid-July to late October; the Queensland Government names August to October as the main whale-watching window. The Boat Club sunset cruise: what "twilight" includes
Some listings describe a Boat Club sunset cruise with an open bar. That is not what the operator sells. The Twilight Bay Cruise includes a "Complimentary glass of bubbles" and a "Small plate of nibbles"; the canteen sells alcoholic and soft drinks. At A$55, and with one free child under 14 per paying adult, it is still the cheapest sunset trip in our GetYourGuide feed (★4.7 from 348 reviews) and a good family evening out. The summer K'gari cruise
From late October to mid-July, Amaroo runs a three-hour K'gari Boom-net & Sightseeing Cruise toward the island, looking out for dolphins, turtles and dugongs. A safety boom-net, reached by three easy steps, lets you sit in the water. At A$60 it is the cheapest wildlife cruise in our GetYourGuide feed. Good fit: budget travellers, families (child fares, free kids on the twilight cruise), local residents who can join the club, and anyone who wants a big, steady catamaran.
Look elsewhere if: you want a small group (Blue Dolphin), a meal on a whale watch (Whalesong), or step-free boarding.
