Blue Dolphin Marine Tours is a family-owned Hervey Bay operator run by skipper Peter Lynch and co-owner Jodie Lynch from Berth B5 at the Great Sandy Straits Marina. It has one boat, an 11.6-metre sailing catamaran, surveyed for 30 but limited to around 24 passengers. That is the smallest group among the regular whale-watch cruises in the bay (only Hervey Bay Dive Centre's 12-guest swim trips run smaller), and its whale trip is a full day rather than a half.

The boat and the marina
Blue Dolphin is a sailing catamaran that cruises at around 7–8 knots under motor, with a hydrophone for listening to whale song and wifi on board. A sail boat of this size moves differently from the larger motor catamarans (16–24 m): lower decks, closer to the water, slower transit to the whale grounds, and far fewer people at the rail. There is one toilet on board, and the operator publishes no wheelchair information, so ask before you book if mobility matters. Departures are from the Great Sandy Straits Marina, Urangan, and the whale day includes courtesy pick-up and drop-off from your accommodation. The exact check-in point is on your voucher.
Blue Dolphin whale watching: the full day
The whale trip leaves at 7:30 am and gets back around 3:30 pm. That is longer than most half days and similar in feel to Freedom's three-quarter day, but with about half the passengers. Morning tea, a full buffet lunch, afternoon tea and one complimentary drink are included.
The operator runs the whale day from mid-July to the end of October; the Queensland Government names August to October as the main whale-watching window.
Two things set expectations:
- No sighting guarantee. "Being a nature based tour there is no guarantee on wild animals." Many larger boats offer a free return trip; Blue Dolphin does not.
- An in-water platform. Guests can "enter the water with the whales under our permit conditions", with no extra charge, but it is opportunistic. Treat it as a possible bonus, not the plan: Queensland's rules keep swimmers from entering the water within 100 m of a whale, and swims do not happen near mothers and calves. Blue Dolphin Marine Tours prices and discounts
Every tour page on bluedolphintours.com.au still carries a fare table labelled for an earlier season. The operator's published fares may not be current, so we do not quote them; use its booking page for this season. The fare structure is adult, child (8–14 on the whale day, 4–14 on the dolphin sail, 4–17 on the sunset sail) and family fares for two adults with two or three children, with under-4s free on the tours that take them.
On GetYourGuide the whale day is A$210, the dolphin sail A$120 and the sunset sail A$100. There is no promo code. The terms refund in full with more than 48 hours' notice "less agents commission", take 50% with 24–48 hours' notice and keep the full fare inside 24 hours. Dolphins and sunsets outside whale season
From late October to early July the boat switches to the Dolphin Eco Adventure, a four-hour sail along the K'gari west coast looking for dolphins, dugongs and turtles. Good fit: couples, photographers and anyone who dislikes crowds at the rail; people who want a slow day on the water with lunch; sailing enthusiasts.
Look elsewhere if: you want a guaranteed return trip (Tasman Venture or Spirit of Hervey Bay), a short trip for small children, or step-free access (Whalesong publishes wheelchair access; Hervey Bay Whale Watch's Quick Cat II also advertises it).

Choose Blue Dolphin for a full whale-watching day with about two dozen people on a sailing catamaran.
It is the smallest regular group on one of the longest standard whale days, lunch and pick-up are included, and there is an opportunistic in-water platform at no extra charge — the reviews (★4.9 on GetYourGuide) back it up.
Skip it if you want a no-whales return-trip guarantee, a trip under four hours, or you have young children under 8 or need wheelchair access, which the operator does not address.
