Kingfisher Bay Resort review: staying on K'gari (Fraser Island), tours, Illumina and deals

Kingfisher Bay Resort is a four-star eco resort, by its own description, on the sheltered western shore of K'gari (Fraser Island). It has 152 hotel rooms, 109 two- and three-bedroom villas and 8 holiday houses, facing the Great Sandy Strait.

It belongs to Kelsian Group, which also owns K'gari Beach Resort on the east coast, K'gari Explorer Tours and the SeaLink K'gari ferry. In practice one company runs your boat, your room and your 4WD tour. This Kingfisher Bay Resort review covers how to get there, what you can book as a guest or a day visitor, and what it all costs.

Getting to Kingfisher Bay Resort from Hervey Bay

The resort is "only five nautical miles from River Heads", a small town about 20 minutes' drive south of Hervey Bay. The SeaLink ferry takes about 45 minutes (the resort's own page says around 50). Everyone needs a pre-purchased ticket, and check-in closes 30 minutes before sailing.

• Mainland Reception: 54 Ariadne Street, River Heads, open daily 8 am–4 pm. Check in here first.
• Guest ferries with porterage: from River Heads at 9 am, 1 pm and 3:45 pm; back from the resort at 8 am, 10:15 am, 2:30 pm and 5 pm.
• Parking at River Heads: A$30 for one night, A$55 for two, A$80 for three, up to A$155 for six, then A$25 a night.
• From the airport: A$15 one way or A$30 return per person to Mainland Reception; the transfer cannot meet flights landing after 3 pm.
• Check-in time: the resort asks guests to be at Mainland Reception 40 minutes before the ferry.

You do not need a car. The only sealed roads on K'gari are inside the grounds of this resort and K'gari Beach Resort, so a 2WD goes nowhere beyond the gate. Bringing a 4WD means a vehicle ferry fare and a QPWS vehicle access permit for anywhere past the resort boundary. Our getting there guide covers the drive from Brisbane.

This is where the resort earns its keep. Prices below are as shown on kingfisherbay.com.

The Beauty Spots 4WD Tour is the one to book. You check in with a ranger at the Sunset Bar at 9 am, then spend the day on Lake McKenzie, Central Station and Wanggoolba Creek, 75 Mile Beach, the Maheno wreck and Eli Creek. Morning tea, a buffet lunch at K'gari Beach Resort, park fees and fuel levies are included. It is free to cancel more than 24 hours ahead, and not suitable for children under one. Illumina at Kingfisher Bay: guests only

Illumina is a light, laser and projection show in the resort grounds, billed by the resort as "The first permanent light, laser, and projection installation of its kind in Queensland". The show, "Return to Sky" by light artist Bruce Ramus, runs nightly for about 23 minutes.

Tickets are A$39 per adult, and children aged 4–14 go free. The key restriction: it is only available to guests staying at Kingfisher Bay Resort. A day visit or a tour that sleeps elsewhere will not get you in. The show uses strobe and high-frequency lighting, so check the photosensitivity warning first.

Kingfisher Bay Resort whale watching

In season the resort runs its own whale cruise from the end of the jetty, operated with Hervey Bay Whale Watch, one of the mainland whale-boat operators. It departs at 7:30 am and returns at noon, daily from mid-July to mid-October. Prices are A$155 per adult and A$99 per child (4–14), and it is for resort guests only.

A whale-swim upgrade costs A$100 extra, conditions permitting, and is refunded if it cannot go ahead. The resort also sells packages that bundle the cruise with a stay, including a three-night deal with a 4WD tour. Kingfisher Bay Resort prices, deals and discounts

When we checked, the resort's deals page listed:

• Bed & Breakfast from A$277 per night.
• Early Booker: 15% off two nights booked at least 60 days ahead.
• K'gari + Adventure, 20% off: two nights, a ranger-guided 4WD tour, breakfast and ferries from A$439.20 per person. It is prepaid and non-refundable, with blackout dates.
• K'gari Whale Retreat: two nights plus the half-day whale cruise from A$439 per person.
• Kids FREE Pass from A$399 per night, with free accommodation, breakfast, 4WD tour and ferry for kids.
• Reef 2 Rainforest: a joint package with Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort (see our Lady Elliot guide).

The flexible "Daily Rate" allows free cancellation or changes up to 7 days before arrival. Deals carry their own, often stricter, terms, so read them before paying.

Through GetYourGuide, the resort itself is not sold, but three K'gari Explorer tours include nights here. The Three-Day Getaway (A$754) spends one night at Kingfisher Bay and one at K'gari Beach Resort; the four-day (A$972) and five-day (A$1,022) add more nights here. Prices are checked regularly.

The Day Away pass for non-guests

If you just want an easy island day, the Day Away costs A$119 per adult and A$79 per child, daily. It includes the 9 am ferry from River Heads, a ranger-guided morning walk, a poolside lunch with one house drink, and day use of the western beach, the pools and the walking trails. The return ferry is at 2:30 or 5 pm, and Hervey Bay pick-up is A$15 per person each way.

The resort says plainly that it "is not a tour and does not include a full day tour of K'gari". You stay around the jetty, beach, The Sand Bar and wallum walkways, not the lakes. Off peak, cancelling inside 15 days costs the full price.

Staying there: dining, pools and the beach

The resort has three restaurants and four bars, including Sand & Wood (modern Australian), Dune (Asian fusion), The Sand Bar & Bistro and the Sunset Bar, plus four lagoon-style pools, which are not heated. Hotel rooms, resort facilities and the River Heads ferry are wheelchair accessible; the resort suggests calling reservations first.

Swimming is allowed in the bay in front of the resort. On the ocean side, QPWS says not to swim at all: the beaches are unpatrolled, with rips and sharks. QPWS also notes marine stingers, especially in summer, and credible crocodile reports along the western coastline, so follow local signs.

K'gari is Butchulla Country; the Butchulla native title determination was heard at Kingfisher Bay Resort in 2014. Wongari (dingoes) live across the island: follow the dingo-safe rules, never feed them and keep children within arm's reach.

Kingfisher Bay Resort reviews, and who should book

We have not stayed at the resort and did not collect hotel-review scores, so we make no claims about room quality. On GetYourGuide, the K'gari Explorer Three-Day Getaway, which includes a night here, holds ★4.8 from 46 reviews.

Good fit: families (Junior Eco Rangers, pools, calm water), couples wanting Illumina and sunsets, and anyone who wants K'gari for two or three nights without a 4WD.

Look elsewhere if: you have one day (a day tour from Hervey Bay is cheaper and covers more), you want to camp or self-drive the east beach, or you want boat access to the remote northern creeks (remote west coast by boat). For every multi-day option, see our multi-day K'gari guide.

Stay at Kingfisher Bay Resort for two or three nights if you want K'gari without driving, and book the full-day 4WD tour from the resort — or take K'gari Explorer's Three-Day Getaway, which includes a night here.

You get the calm west-coast beach, ranger-guided walks, a daily 4WD tour to Lake McKenzie and the eastern beach, and, from mid-July to mid-October, a whale cruise from the jetty, all without a car.

Skip it if you only have one day (a 4WD day tour from Hervey Bay covers more for less), you want surf-side beaches (the resort faces the Great Sandy Strait), or you want to see Illumina without staying — you cannot.
