Tasman Venture is a family-run Hervey Bay operator that has been running trips since 1990. Owners Lloyd and Robyn Burgess started with a 12.5-metre boat running full-day whale trips for up to 42 passengers. Today the business runs two things most visitors care about: a 4-hour whale watch in season, and a full day by boat to the remote west coast of K'gari (Fraser Island), with a whale-swim option in winter.
It is also the confirmed supplier of three GetYourGuide products, including the site's flagship K'gari trip. That makes this Tasman Venture review mostly about those three: what they include, what they cost, and who should pick something else.

Direct fares are as shown on tasmanventure.com.au; GetYourGuide prices are checked regularly. The operator states the whale season as "usually during early July – late October", and the half day's published run is 11 July to 25 October. The Queensland Government names August to October as the main whale-watching window; Tasman's own FAQ puts the humpback peak "between August to September".
Fleet and departure point
The office and departures are at the Great Sandy Straits Marina on Buccaneer Drive, Urangan, the main whale-boat marina. Both day types include hotel pick-up from select accommodation. The exact check-in point is on your voucher.
The site names two main vessels, Tasman Venture III and Pure Dive, plus three amphibious SeaLegs tenders that carry guests from the main boat onto the beach on K'gari. The "Our Boats" page is still "Coming Soon", so there are no published lengths or survey capacities. What the operator does publish:
- The half-day boat is a fast catamaran with a water-level viewing platform, an underwater viewing window and a hydrophone.
- In whale season the half day is capped at "approximately 85 passengers".
- The remote K'gari day carries a maximum of 35, which "may increase when a larger vessel is substituted".
- There are a few steps to the forward deck and a flight of stairs to the upper decks; the Bowarrady dune walk "can be strenuous".
Some descriptions online mention a 40-guest catamaran. That is not what the operator says: 35 on the K'gari day, about 85 on the whale watch. Our boat types guide explains what those numbers mean on the water.
The 4-hour Tasman Venture whale watching trip
This is a straight half-day whale watch: out from Urangan to the whale grounds, time with the pods, and back. Two light meal services are included — morning or afternoon tea on the way out, an antipasto-style platter on the way back — plus commentary and the hotel transfer.
The guaranteed sightings policy covers the half day only. In the operator's words, "you will receive an open dated return ticket if you do not see any whales." That is a free re-trip, not a refund. The full-day tours carry no such guarantee.

Remote K'gari by boat, and the whale swim
The full-day trips go to the island's quiet western side: Wathumba Creek, Awinya Creek and Bowarrady Creek, where there are coloured sands and a dune climb. Morning tea, a buffet lunch and afternoon tea are included, along with kayaks, snorkelling gear, tube rides and guided walks; the bar sells drinks. Tasman calls itself "the only operator with access to these locations on the Western side" — that is its own claim.
What you will not see: the operator says plainly that its tours do not visit Lake McKenzie or the Maheno wreck. Our remote west coast guide sets the day against the classic 4WD loop.
In whale season, the Remote K'gari & Whale Experience adds whale watching, and it is the only Tasman trip with the in-water "Whale immersion experience". It is not guaranteed: it is offered "when conditions permit, at the skippers discretion". Tasman says July and August are best, and chances "dramatically decrease" from September. Plan the day as a K'gari trip with a possible swim, not a swim trip.
The context matters: whale swims are legal in Hervey Bay only as a permitted commercial activity inside the Great Sandy Marine Park. Under Queensland's marine mammal rules nobody may enter the water within 100 m of a whale, so the boat stops well off and the whales decide whether to come closer. Operators do not swim near mothers and calves, which is why the odds fall later in the season.

The half day costs A$155 whether you book direct or on GetYourGuide. For the full day, GetYourGuide's A$269 is A$10 above the operator's "from" fare of A$259. Child, student, senior, family, locals, group (15+) and Companion Card fares exist but sit inside the operator's booking widget, which we could not load; infants under 3 are free.

Who it suits, and how to book
Good fit: first-timers who want a mid-sized boat with an underwater window; families (no stated minimum age; infants free); anyone who wants K'gari's beaches and creeks without a day on a 4WD bus.
Look elsewhere if: you want a small sailing boat (see Blue Dolphin), a longer relaxed day on the water (Freedom), a dedicated whale-swim trip, or wheelchair access — the steps and amphibious tender transfers make the K'gari day hard going.
