Freedom Whale Watch, the trading name of Freedom Ecotours Pty Ltd, runs one headline trip from the Great Sandy Straits Marina: a relaxed whale cruise of about six hours on Freedom III, a 17.7-metre power catamaran licensed for 48 people in the bay. Owners Mark and Andrea Cooper took over what they describe as a well-established cruise company with a 15-year legacy, and the boat itself was once owned by documentary filmmaker Ben Cropp.
The GetYourGuide listing, the Whale Odyssey Cruise, is confirmed as Freedom's. It is the best-rated whale trip in our GetYourGuide feed, and the one to look at if a half day feels too rushed.

GetYourGuide prices are checked regularly. Some descriptions call this a full day on a fast catamaran. Neither is quite right: it is a three-quarter day, and Freedom cruises at 14–18 knots and sells itself on being unhurried rather than fast.
Freedom III: the boat
Freedom III is 58 feet (17.7 m), built in 1990 in Innisfail, with twin Fiat Iveco engines. The operator's spec sheet lists a hydraulic lift platform and three toilets. The homepage calls it a "60-foot catamaran"; we use the spec-sheet figure.

Freedom whale watching: the day and the policy
Six hours on the water leaves more time with the whales than a 3–4 hour trip, and time to eat properly. If you have only one whale trip in your plans and the budget stretches, this is the kind of day that pays off; our half day vs full day guide weighs it up.
Freedom's position on guarantees is unusual. It "never guarantee[s] sightings because that is deemed to be an unsustainable practice", but it does offer a free "rain-check" return cruise if you see no whales. The rain-check is non-transferable, must be used the same season and can only be booked through the office. Freedom does not offer whale swims.
Freedom Whale Watch prices and discounts
GetYourGuide lists the Whale Odyssey at A$195. Freedom's direct adult fare is only visible inside its booking widget, which we could not load, so we cannot compare like for like. What the homepage does say: children are A$75 or less in a family group. Children are 4–17, with a limit of three per responsible adult; seniors are 65+.
One practical difference: return bus transfers are included on direct bookings only. If you book elsewhere, check the listing's inclusions or plan to drive to the marina. Freedom Whale Watch reviews and awards
The GetYourGuide record is the strongest we can cite: ★5 from 84 reviews for the Whale Odyssey. Freedom also claims "over 3500 five star reviews on Google, Trip advisor, and GetYourGuide" and calls itself "the ONLY whale tour in Hervey bay with a 5 star rating on Google" — both are the operator's claims, which we did not verify, and we do not repeat them as fact.
The operator says the Premium Whale Watch Cruise was listed among Tourism and Events Queensland's "Best Experiences", and that it is certified through Ecotourism Australia's ECO and ROC (Respecting Our Culture) programmes.
Season, access and who it suits
Freedom's whale season is shorter than most. Its terms give the return-cruise window as 11 July to 29 September; another page says mid-July to 1 October. The Queensland Government names August to October as the main whale-watching window, so Freedom covers August and September but not most of October. Most other boats run to late October, so an October visitor may need another operator; see the whale season guide.
Access is limited: Freedom is "unable to accept bookings for guests who need to use a wheelchair or walking frame onboard", everyone must manage five steps with a handrail, there is no room for prams in whale season, and the cruise "is not recommended for infants".
