Visit Fraser Island review: the K'gari (Fraser Island) booking agent and its packages

The name suggests an official island site. It is not. visitfraserisland.com.au is run by Australian Online Tour Bookings (ABN 69 189 344 347), which describes itself as a "Reputable online travel agent since 2007". It resells K'gari (Fraser Island) tours, Hervey Bay whale cruises and a set of combination packages from several operators.

That is a legitimate business model; you just need to know you are dealing with an agent. The site sorts K'gari tours by where they leave from: Brisbane, Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach and the Sunshine Coast. That is useful if you have not yet decided where to base yourself — our getting there guide helps with that. For Hervey Bay, the site covers:

The logic is sound. K'gari has two quite different sides. The classic 4WD east-coast day takes you to Lake McKenzie, 75 Mile Beach, Eli Creek and the Maheno wreck by 4WD bus via the River Heads ferry. The remote west coast by boat goes to creeks and beaches the buses do not reach. Doing both means two operators and two bookings; the package puts them in one.

Before you pay, confirm whether the price is per person, what each day includes, and which dates the two trips run. The whale versions only operate in whale season, mid-July to late October.

How booking and cancellation work

The agent's cancellation page is short. It says "We do not charge cancellation fees", but it "will pass on any fees that the relevant operator may deem applicable". Refunds go to the card first charged.

So the operator's terms decide what you get back, and those vary a lot:

• Fraser Experience Tours direct: full refund only more than 48 hours before.
• K'gari Explorer direct: 24 hours on day and 2-day tours, 7 days on 3- to 5-day tours.
• Fraser Dingo 4WD Adventures direct: no refunds or date changes within 7 days.

What to check before you book an agent package

Agents make it easy to click "book" on two trips at once. A few checks save trouble later:

1. Who runs each day. Look up the operator of each part and read its own terms and reviews.
2. Dates that actually connect. The remote K'gari boat day and a 4WD day both start early; you cannot do both on one day, and whale versions run only in season.
3. Pick-ups. Remote K'gari boat days leave from the Urangan marinas; the ferries and 4WD tours leave from River Heads, often with hotel pick-up. The exact check-in point is on your voucher.
4. Per person or per booking. Package tables do not always say.
5. The cancellation chain. The agent charges no fee of its own, but the stricter of the two operators' policies decides what you lose if plans change.

Who it suits

Good fit: travellers who want both sides of K'gari, or Lady Elliot plus K'gari, and like one booking for it; people still choosing between Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach and the Sunshine Coast as a base.

A last note on safety and respect: K'gari is Butchulla country, and national-park rules, including the wongari (dingo) safety rules, apply whoever you book with.
