Viator Hervey Bay review: how the Tripadvisor platform compares for whales and K'gari

Viator is the tour and activity booking platform of Tripadvisor. Tripadvisor agreed to buy it in July 2014 and completed the deal that August; Viator now calls itself "a Tripadvisor company". Australian bookings may be processed by Viator Systems Pty Limited in Sydney.

This Viator Hervey Bay review is structural on purpose. Disclosure: our booking partner is GetYourGuide, which pays us a commission, so Viator is a direct competitor. We therefore quote no Viator prices — our only price source is the GetYourGuide feed — and stick to how the platform works, what it lists in Hervey Bay, and what to check before paying.

How Viator works

Viator's terms say it is "not a travel or tour agency" and that it "acts as a disclosed agent on behalf of the Supplier". In plain terms: the operator runs the tour and sets the product; Viator takes the booking and payment. How Viator is paid by operators is not set out in the terms we checked, but agent platforms generally work on commission — which is why the operator's own site is always worth a look. Each listing names the operator under "Supplied by".

That is the same basic model as GetYourGuide and the local agents. The differences are in the details: cancellation rules, how listings are ranked, and which operators choose to list.

What Viator lists in Hervey Bay

When we checked, Viator's Hervey Bay tours page showed 15 results, mostly on the water:

• Whale watching: Freedom Whale Watch and Boat Club's MV Amaroo among others;
• K'gari: remote K'gari by boat, with and without the whale version, and Fraser Experience Tours' small-group 4WD day;
• Cruises: Eco Marine's Milbi sunset cruise, plus other sunset, dolphin and boom-net cruises (an archived copy of the page showed a twilight cruise, a champagne sunset sail, a dolphin sail and a summer boom-net cruise);
• Beyond the bay: the Mary Valley Rattler heritage train from Gympie.

Archived Viator listings also show Whalesong's half day and Pacific Whale Foundation's 3-hour whale watch, both with the operator named under "Supplied by".

In short, the same local operators as elsewhere. Viator does not have its own boats or special access; a seat on Freedom is a seat on Freedom however you book it.

Viator cancellation: 24 hours, with exceptions

Viator's standard terms let you change or cancel up to 24 hours before the start time. Products marked "All Sales Final" do not follow that rule. On the listings we checked:

• An archived Whalesong half-day listing said "You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund."
• An archived Pacific Whale Foundation listing said the experience was "non-refundable and cannot be changed for any reason".

Compare that with the operators' own terms. Pacific Whale Foundation's site refunds in full if you cancel more than 48 hours out. Whalesong's direct headline is a full refund more than 48 hours out for groups under eight. So the platform window can be better or worse than direct, trip by trip.

GetYourGuide works the same way: its default is 24 hours, but Hervey Bay listings show 24 hours, 2 days or 14 days. Our GetYourGuide review and prices and deals guide set out the windows.

How Viator ranks and reviews

Two things to know when you browse. First, the Hervey Bay list carried the notice "Revenue may affect this sort order", so the top result is not purely the best-rated. Sort by rating yourself.

Second, reviews: an archived Hervey Bay listing showed its score as "Total reviews and rating from Viator & Tripadvisor", with the note "We perform checks on reviews". So a Viator score pools both sites. As with any platform, check the review count, the dates, and the operator's own site.

What to check before booking Viator in Hervey Bay

1. The "Supplied by" name. Look up that operator's own site, terms and sighting policy (usually a free return trip, not a refund).
2. The cancellation box. 24 hours is standard, but "All Sales Final" and non-refundable listings exist here.
3. The currency. Check the price is shown in AUD before comparing.
4. Pick-up and meeting point. Whale boats leave from Urangan; K'gari 4WD days use River Heads or hotel pick-ups. The exact check-in point is on your voucher.
5. The same trip elsewhere. Compare with the operator direct and GetYourGuide on the same date. Prices checked regularly on our side.

Who Viator suits

Good fit: travellers who plan on Tripadvisor already and want one account for a long trip; anyone who finds a listing there with better cancellation terms than direct.

Look elsewhere if: the listing is non-refundable and your dates may move. Choose your boat on our whale watching guide or your island day on our K'gari guide, then book where the terms suit you.

One last point applies wherever you book: whale "guarantees" in Hervey Bay are the operator's, not the platform's, and they are usually a free return trip rather than a refund. Boat Club, for example, publishes a complimentary return ticket if no whales are seen between 23 July and 7 October, and "No refunds will be issued". Viator is a sound place to book a Hervey Bay trip if it is already your platform — just read each listing's cancellation box, because a few are non-refundable.

It is owned by Tripadvisor, names the supplier on each listing, and lists most of the same local operators with a standard 24-hour cancellation window.
