GetYourGuide is an online marketplace. In Hervey Bay it sells whale watching, K'gari (Fraser Island) day and multi-day tours, bay cruises, sunset sails, scenic flights and a few day trips, all run by local operators. Prices below are in Australian dollars and checked regularly.
How GetYourGuide works in Hervey Bay
The legal set-up matters when something goes wrong. GetYourGuide Deutschland GmbH in Berlin runs the platform; payments from Australian customers are processed by GetYourGuide Australia Pty Ltd. Its terms describe it as an "intermediary platform" acting "as a commercial agent for the Suppliers". Your contract for the tour is with the operator.
Every product page names that operator as the "Activity provider". In Hervey Bay you will find the same local businesses you would book direct:
- whale watching from Urangan with Tasman Venture, Whalesong, Freedom Whale Watch, Blue Dolphin, Pacific Whale Foundation and Boat Club;
- K'gari 4WD days and multi-day tours from K'gari Explorer, Fraser Experience and Fraser Dingo 4WD Adventures;
- cruises from Eco Marine, Boat Club and Blue Dolphin, plus helicopter flights and axe throwing.
How it makes money: the operator pays GetYourGuide a commission, which is already included in the price you see. Out of its cut, GetYourGuide pays affiliates like us.
GetYourGuide cancellation: 24 hours is only the default
This is the part most people get wrong. GetYourGuide's general terms say you get a full refund if you cancel more than 24 hours before the start, and nothing inside 24 hours or for a no-show — unless the listing, the operator's terms or your voucher say otherwise. Plenty of Hervey Bay listings do. What we found on the listings:

The operators' own terms are different again, and not always in the same direction:
- Fraser Experience Tours direct: full refund only more than 48 hours out. Its GetYourGuide listing: 24 hours. The platform is more generous here.
- Fraser Dingo 4WD Adventures direct: no refunds or date changes within 7 days of departure. Its GetYourGuide listings: 24 hours.
- The Salty Axe direct: no refunds, credit only, and nothing inside 48 hours. Its GetYourGuide listing: 24 hours.
- K'gari Explorer direct: 24 hours on day and 2-day tours, 7 days on 3- to 5-day tours. On GetYourGuide: 2 days, and 14 days on the 4- and 5-day tours. Here direct is more flexible.

GetYourGuide prices vs booking direct
On most Hervey Bay trips the GetYourGuide price equals the operator's own "from" fare. A few examples, direct fares as published on the operators' sites:

Two more things work against the platform. Direct sites often sell child, family, concession and Companion Card fares the platform does not show. And some operators reward direct bookers: Whalesong gives on-board credit or a gift.
In GetYourGuide's favour, its price-match promise covers the same activity with the same operator and conditions found cheaper online (loyalty, group and non-public promotions excluded). "Reserve now, pay later" is offered on selected trips: your card is charged 72 hours before the start.
GetYourGuide reviews: what the stars mean
GetYourGuide states that "All reviews are from customers who booked and completed this activity", and its terms ban reviews written by or for the operator or paid for by a third party. Recent reviews count for more in the rating. That is a real strength over open review sites.
The limit: scores reflect only people who booked through the platform, and a new listing can show no rating at all. The Butchulla cultural day had no reviews yet when we checked. We quote GetYourGuide ratings throughout this site, always with the review count, so you can judge the sample.

- A few trips cost more than the operator's fare; concession and family fares are often missing.
- The contract is with the operator but the booking sits with the platform, so a problem can mean dealing with two parties.
