Seair Pacific review: how Lady Elliot Island flights from Hervey Bay actually work

People search "Seair Pacific Hervey Bay" because Seair is the airline that flies to Lady Elliot Island, the reef cay at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. The catch: you cannot book those flights with Seair. Seair is the resort's exclusive charter carrier, and every seat is sold through Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort. This page explains how the system works, what the day trip costs and includes, and what to book if you would rather not fly.

Who Seair Pacific is

Seair Pacific began tourism and charter flying on the Gold Coast in 1971. Peter and Julie Gash bought it in 1989 and remain the sole owners; Peter has been chief pilot since then. Before buying Seair he ran joy flights on the Gold Coast and reef day tours to Lady Musgrave Island.

Today the company runs about 10 aircraft with roughly 100 staff, from hangars at Coolangatta and Hervey Bay airports. Its fleet includes Cessna Caravans, a King Air B200 and a Twin Otter. Most of its work is charter: private and corporate flights, fly-in fly-out mining runs, freight and aerial photography. Its public "Touring" range is multi-day outback air tours leaving the Gold Coast.

The Lady Elliot connection dates to 1996. Seair describes itself as "the exclusive Air Charter Service provider for the Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort", flying all the resort's fly-in fly-out services.

How Lady Elliot Island flights actually work

The resort's getting-here page is blunt: Lady Elliot is a "private closed destination", and no other flight access is permitted. There is no ferry and no public airline. So in practice:

1. You book with the resort, not Seair, whether it is a day trip, a stay with flights, or flights only.
2. The resort's reservations team books your seat on the Seair charter.
3. You check in at the Lady Elliot Island counter at Hervey Bay (Fraser Coast) Airport, 30 minutes before the 8:10 am departure.
4. Seair flies you there in a small aircraft, about 40 minutes, landing on the grass airstrip. The resort calls Lady Elliot "the only coral cay Island with an airstrip on the Great Barrier Reef".

The Lady Elliot day trip from Hervey Bay

The day-trip price covers a lot. Per the resort, it includes:

• The return scenic flight and a welcome drink.
• An island orientation tour.
• A glass-bottom boat or guided snorkel tour, with snorkel gear and a short wetsuit.
• A hot and cold buffet lunch.
• An afternoon guided activity.
• Towels, sunscreen and reef shoes, and use of the day-guest facilities.
• The Environmental Management Charge and the fuel levy.

The limits to plan for: one small backpack of up to 4 kg, with no overhead lockers on board. The resort warns the flight time may vary and can include a transit stop. The island sits inside a highly protected Green Zone of the marine park, about 80 km north-east of Bundaberg. Our Lady Elliot Island guide covers the day hour by hour.

Manta rays and the reef

Lady Elliot calls itself the "Home of the Manta Ray" and says the island accounts for "roughly 70% of the sightings on the East coast of Australia", with winter a top time. The resort also counts "over 1,200 species of marine life" around the cay. These are the resort's own figures, but they explain the price: it is the quickest way from Hervey Bay to Great Barrier Reef snorkelling.

Seair Pacific prices, safety and charters

For Lady Elliot, Seair publishes no prices, because it does not sell the seats. For private charters its FAQ says the aircraft carry up to twelve passengers and "the charter cost is calculated per hour not per passenger". Quotes come through its online form or on 1300 473 247.

On safety, Seair says its aircraft carry GPS, satellite navigation and weather radar, and that all its pilots are instrument rated and practise emergency procedures in the company's own King Air simulator. It flies under its own Air Operator's Certificate (SQ-504606), held since 1989, and says it meets CASA's mandatory audit regime and maintains its aircraft to an airline (Class A RPT) standard. Those are the operator's statements; we have not audited them. Seair also lists itself as a supporter of Project Manta, the research programme on the rays that Lady Elliot visitors come to see.

The alternative: Lady Musgrave Island by boat

If A$595 is too steep, or small planes are not for you, the nearest reef day on GetYourGuide leaves from Bundaberg. The Lady Musgrave Island trip is a 10-hour catamaran day from Burnett Heads with a local lunch, snorkel gear and a guided island walk, at A$345. It has ★4.8 from 361 reviews. Burnett Heads is about 2 hours by road from Hervey Bay, so it suits a trip north rather than a day from Hervey Bay. Prices are checked regularly.

Who should fly with Seair to Lady Elliot

Good fit: anyone in Hervey Bay who wants proper reef snorkelling in one day; manta-ray hunters in winter; travellers happy to pay for speed.

Think twice if: you are nervous in small aircraft, need to carry more than a 4 kg bag, or want a cheaper reef day, in which case the Lady Musgrave boat trip from Bundaberg costs A$250 less per adult. Lady Elliot is a private, closed island reached only on the resort's Seair charters, and the day trip bundles flights, snorkel gear, a glass-bottom boat or guided snorkel, and lunch, with about seven hours on the reef.
